John Martin was born in Haydon Bridge on the 19th July 1789. From his humble beginnings here in the village he became 'the most popular artist of his day'and his paintings are hung in galleries across the world. His major influences were gained from romanticism, the bible and panoramic vistas in this area where he spent his childhood.
The Martin family lived first at a cottage at East Land Ends Farm, then at Low Hall and finally in Ratcliffe Road. His brother Jonathan gained fame as the 'notorious incendiary' of York Minster [yes!-he tried to burn it down!!]
A painting of John Martin's called 'Pandemonium' was recently sold at auction for £1.6 million. You can see the best collection of his work including one of his most famous paintings
'The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah'
in the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle.
